Illustrator Vector Light Writing Alphabet (Blue)

In this vector Adobe Illustrator tutorial we are going to learn how to apply Transfuchsian’s Premium light effect brushes to some text to achieve a shining light writing effect. We will start by building a base for the text and then embellish those shapes with light flares, glitter and shine.

Before You Begin:

Purchase and download Transfuchisan’s Premium Light Effect brushes:

Step 1:  Set up your art board.  I have created a simple 8.5 x 11 inch letter size art board.  Create a simple black rectangle for the background.  Note:  You will want to make sure that the black you use is set to use color and not simply 100% K.  I usually set all colors at about 94% (C: 94%, M: 94%, Y:94%, K:94%).

Step 2: If you already have beautiful script handwriting, then great!  Go ahead and draw out a basic guide to layout your text.  If your handwriting is horrible (like mine), you may want to use a script font as a guide.  For this example I am using a font called “Arizonia” which can be downloaded at fontsquirrel.com.

Step 3: We are going to go over the widest parts of the letters with our own brush strokes.  Select the parts of the letter that you would like to put emphasis on.  Using the Pencil (N) or Pen (P) tool, we are going to make broad strokes to start our design.  I am using a basic brush with the Variable Width Profile set to the one with pointed ends.

Step 4: I have set the stroke at 5pt for our lettering base and will use these strokes to begin building the light drawing.

Step 5: Open up your Light Brushes through the brush palette (F5).  If you don’t have them downloaded in Adobe’s default folder you will need to click the menu in the upper right hand corner of the palette, click “Open Brush Library” then “Other Library”.  Open the folder you saved the brushes in and click Open.  For this tutorial, I am using the set with the pointed ends (pointedbrushes.ai from the file you downloaded).

Step 6: Because I wanted to keep track of my initial layout, I am going to make a copy of the layer that has the strokes we made in Step 3 before applying the brushes to them. After you have made a copy of the existing layer, you can go ahead and hide its visibility.

Step 7: Select all of the strokes in the new layer you just created and apply one of the brushes to them.  You can choose any color. For this tutorial I am going to make an overall blue color, so I chose the light blue brush.

Step 8: Select all of the strokes in this layer and change the Transparency mode to Screen.  Create a new, blank layer.

Step 9: We are going to build some more strokes around our main outlines. You will want to start from the edges loosely following the lines we have already established. I have made the strokes red in the screenshot so you can see how you want to start forming the lines.

Here is what it looks like after I added all of the new strokes:

Step 10: After you have all of your new strokes placed where you want them, you will want to select them all and apply the same light effect brush to the new strokes. This time we are going to change the Transparency mode to Overlay. This adds some more wispy-ness to the letters.

Step 10: Illustrator Tutorial – How to make a vector light drawing text effect

Step 11: Make a copy of this layer.  We are going to remove the light effect brush and change it back to a basic brush (click the Basic brush at the top of your Brush Palette).  Change the Variable Width Profile to the one with pointed ends like in Step 3.  Keep the Transparency set to Overlay.

Step 12: Create a new layer.  We are going to selectively add some additional lines flowing off of the thickest parts of the letters.  Again, I have used a red stroke so that you can see where I have placed the lines.

Step 12: Illustrator Tutorial – How to make a vector light drawing text effect

Step 13: For these strokes, we are going to use the lighter blue brush (lightbrush5) and set the stroke weight to 0.25pt (assuming you are working with a letter sized artboard). You will then set the Transparency to Color Dodge.

Step 13: Illustrator Tutorial – How to make a vector light drawing text effect

Step 14: Now we are going to add a little bit of a Bokeh effect to the strokes.  Create a new layer and draw a small circle with a 2pt stroke.  I set the fill color to # DAEAF1 and the stroke color to # EAF5F3.  Drag this circle over to the Brushes palette and create a new scatter brush with it.  I used the settings below:

Step 15: Use your new scatter brush and make some strokes following the outlines of your letters. I set the Transparency mode to Color Dodge and Opacity down a little to 70%.

Step 16: Make a copy of the dot layer, select the strokes and change the stroke size to 0.5 and set the Transparency mode to Color Dodge at 100% Opacity.

Step 17: This is an optional step.  If you would like to accentuate the smaller lines a little bit more, you can make a copy of your original stroke layer (from step 6).   Change the stroke to a Basic stroke with the pointed ends and increase the size to 20pt.  Change the color to a dark blue.  I chose # 09212D.

Step 18: In order to add the extra glitter and shine, I would like to refer you to a previous tutorial I did, in which I describe how to create your own sparkle.  Check out the tutorial by CLICKING HERE  and follow steps 19-31 to learn how to make a sparkle. Note: you will want to change the colors used to match with the color you chose for your text. I updated my sparkle to a light blue # C0E3F2 and set the blend mode to Color Dodge.

Save yourself some time!  You can also download a full set of light effects from Transfuchsian:

Step 19: Once you have created or purchased a sparkle, you will want to place it over the thickest parts of your letters as well as use them to dot your “I”s.  I used the starbursts from my light effect set.
